In October 2024, the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons Charity (CEKFC) was approached by Kim Tucker of Pluckley following a devastating and life-changing medical emergency affecting her 16-year-old daughter, Rubie.
Rubie, a bright, fun-loving young person with her whole life ahead of her, suffered a sudden and extremely rare cardiac arrhythmia which caused a catastrophic cardiac arrest. Although swift action by a close friend — who immediately commenced CPR — helped to save her life, Rubie was without oxygen for a prolonged period, resulting in severe and permanent brain injury.
Following emergency airlift to King’s College Hospital, London, Rubie spent time in intensive care before being transferred through high dependency and specialist neurological wards. Doctors later confirmed that the lack of oxygen to her brain had caused profound neurological damage. As a result, Rubie is unable to walk, talk, eat or drink independently and requires full assistance for all aspects of her care. She is expected to remain under hospital care for an extended period.
Understandably, this has had a profound emotional and financial impact on Rubie’s family. Both her mum and step-dad were forced to give up work so that one parent could remain by Rubie’s bedside while the other cared for her siblings. At the same time, the family faced increasing financial pressures as they began planning significant adaptations to their home, with the aim of bringing Rubie back to live with her family in a safe and supportive environment.
The CEKFC quickly recognised the importance of supporting the family during this incredibly difficult time and reached out to local Freemasons for assistance, supported by W Bro Bob Hadlow. In response, East Kent Combined Services Lodge rallied support from other Lodges and Chapters across the Province, demonstrating the strength of Freemasonry working together for a common cause.
Through this collective effort, a grant of £3,500 was awarded to contribute towards the purchase of a specialist hospital-grade bed, specifically designed to meet Rubie’s complex medical and care needs. This essential piece of equipment will play a vital role in enabling Rubie to be cared for at home, surrounded by her family, while ensuring her safety, comfort and dignity.
The CEKFC is proud to have played a part in supporting Rubie and her family, and grateful to all the Lodges and Chapters who came together to make this grant possible. This project stands as a powerful example of Freemasonry’s commitment to compassion, community support and making a meaningful difference when it is needed most.
